What is Autism Spectrum Disorder? #
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition that affects the brain. Many people with autism have a collection of social, behavioral, and other neurological symptoms, which generally begin early in childhood. Depending on the type and severity of autism, parents may begin noticing symptoms in infancy up through elementary school years. Although autism is a life-long condition, many people notice that their symptoms may change over time, and certain therapies may help children with autism function more easily in school, at home, and with friends.
Symptoms of autism can vary widely, but they generally have several main components: challenges in social interactions, difficulties in communication, and repetitive behaviors. Many people with autism are also more likely to have co-occurring conditions, like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
While the exact causes of autism remain unclear, research suggests that both genetic and environmental factors play a role.
Neurocytonix is launching a clinical trial to see whether our technology may help decrease symptoms for children with autism.
